Learning Objectives

Projects to Meet Objectives

  • To learn management and utilization of large, complex quantities of information and data to enhance search results for consumers by writing Boolean search string rules to disambiguate otherwise ambiguous search terms.

  • To evaluate, work within, and enhance a large controlled vocabulary in a corporate setting, as well as understanding how free text search and controlled vocabulary search work together to produce desired query results for the user.
  • Within most tasks performed during the DFW, the controlled vocabulary will be central to how the data and information are retrieved on the user end and how decisions are made internally for precision and accuracy in the search results.  Evaluation of the controlled vocabulary will include understanding the organization of it, how it works, the implications of controlled vocabulary hierarchies on the overall function of the site, and making suggestions for edits to keywords and creation of new preferred terms. • To further understand the consumer/user experience searching on a large, complex website and how companies/organizations can make changes to further enhance the experience and aid the user in achieving the desired search results.
  • Review of search logs, performing sample searches and evaluating what results are returned, and making suggestions for improvements.  Major tasks include editing keyword weighting rules to further refine relevant results and creation of keyword weighting rules.
